So, I’ve finally given in and setup a myspace account. Check it out @ http://www.myspace.com/twhiting9275 .

Feel free to add me to your friends list if you desire, and I’ll do the same. I’ll post random stuff there, this place will always be my homepage, but the networking capabilities of myspace are just friggin awesome, so I had to do it.

Happy Birthday (to me)

I’ve been a fan of Zakk Wylde since I first picked up Pride and Glory in Seattle some 10 years ago (at least I think it’s been 10). The tape (at the time cd players weren’t exactly "cheap") wasn’t the usual Zakk, yet something struck me. I remember walking home thinking "I’ve heard this guy". Checked the liner notes on a couple of Ozzy tapes and lo and behold, I ran across Zakk’s name.

Bounce forward about 10 years, and , well, I FINALLY get a chance to see this guy in concert. NOT only in concert, but on my *censored*in Birthday!! How sweet is THAT??? Not like I’ve got a chance at actually meeting him and the boys, but my god THAT would top things off.

The trip is going to be Nov 9th - 13th (I’ll get back in Iowa around noon the 13th), and it’s going to be a hell of a trip. Greyhound’s already booked, tickets for the show are in my hand. All I’ve got to do is book the hotel room, which is gonna be a not so cheap thing.

NOT only do I get to see Zakk and BLS (http://www.zakkwylde.com) on my birthday, but the night after, the same theatre is showing a preview of Sammy Hagar’s new DVD. Now that’s some sweet shit. The cost for that one? $5 at the door. NIIIICE.

But wait, there’s MORE!

I’m going to be back in Iowa on Monday afternoon, and I’ll have work to catch up on (I’m sure) then. Tuesday, same old same old. Wednesday? Another concert. This one from the RCPM boys (http://www.azpeacemakers.com).

I swear to god, this is going to be one of THE best weeks in my life. So far, plans for St. Louis:

Nov 10th: Arrival/check in (I have the room booked for the 9th, but will get in around 2am). Sleep, shit, shower, shavee, then we go and see what St. Louis is like.

Nov 11th (day):
Not much of anything at all. Probably start drinking a bit early.

Nov 11th(night):
Zakk and BLS @ the pageant theatre (http://www.thepageant.com) .

Nov 12th (day):
Kick back, recover from hangover from previous evening, maybe catch something downtown and explore the downtown area of St. Louis

Nov 12th(night):
2 showings are planned for the dvd release. I may catch the first, and stick around for the second (venue has approved this).

I’m sure I’ll have some free time in there , in fact I know I will, but hey, I’ve got to see the sites of St. Louis!!!!!

This is gonna kick SOOOO much fucking ass!!!!!

Lata

lessons in security: check your bank daily!

I logged into paypal, and saw the following transaction on my report:
DIGITAL AGE 888-529-98 CYPRUS
Doing a simple search(http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22+DIGITAL+AGE+888-529-98+CYPRUS%22&btnG=Google+Search)showed that this wasn’t the only transaction they’d tried to make fraudulently. Thankfully, my card @ paypal never (ever) has monies on it, unless I’m specifically expecting the charge. That’s just a default card to take funds OUT of it, without waiting the 3 days for the bank transfer.

I’m curious as to HOW they got the info (I NEVER use that card online), but the lesson learned was quite simple. Check everything DAILY. Not that I DON’T mind you, but it is still a very very valid lesson. If you don’t know where the charge came from, report it to your cardholder.

Anyways, a tip for security. There’s more out there, but this one came up when doing this. Good luck, and enjoy!!!

About This Section

The purpose of this post is not to do anything but inform. Many people have a problem understanding the difference between IC and OOC, or what each of those are, so I’ll take a bit and inform individuals of what this is, and how this will work.

Oxeab is a character, my main, in fact, on Sony’s Everquest 2 system. The adventures, or stories, or even advice posted in here will be through his eyes, IE: IC (in character). This will be the only OOC (Out Of Character) post here.

Freaked out? Wondering what the hell I’m on? Well, I’m not on anything, I’m just a rather large RPG (role playing game) nut. I’m not married to my character, or anything silly like that, I just have a good time with this type of game.

Anyways, on to the fun and games. If you want to post some ridiculous comment, remember, I WILL ban on site, done so before. If you’re after helpful comments, by all means, post away.

Have fun, and enjoy the topic

The morning after

Last night, some shitty local band opened up, and I don’t think there were too many who DIDN’T want them to leave the stage. I mean come on, they were way too damn loud, way too UNoriginal, and played flat out stupid covers. The originals were good mind you, but the covers, well they just sucked major ass.

Finally, RCPM showed up, did their thing (2 hours mind you), and completely kicked ass, as per the norm. What else can you expect from one of the greater , TRUE rock bands of all time, right?

One of hte best things about these guys is the fact that they don’t just pack shit up and leave after the show, they kick back, have a few, and actully bullshit with their fans. We got the chance to sit and talk with Nick last night for a good half hour, or better, and he just sat and talked about whatever came up. Not the first time someone’s done that I’m sure, but he just kicked ass. What’s worse is we caught him outside smoking a cigar, probably his “alone time” or quiet time, but the man kept on conversing with us, rather than just go around the corner (which , eventually he DID do, for some reason) and continue his alone/quiet time.

Every show, I seem to outdo the previous show as far as alcohol consumption. Last count last night was around 10 drinks, and, even for a big guy like me, that is no small number, especially when we’re talking mixed drinks, not beer. Yikes.

Every show, however, I tend to wake up just fine. Sure, I’ve got a bit of a headache, and sure my ears are killin me, but I doubt that’s the alcohol, more like the INCREDIBLY shitty sound @ the reverb. Of course, what do I know, right? I’m just happy to have made it to yet ANOTHER kickass RCPM show, seriously.

Every bit of last night kicked major ass. Not just parts, but all of it. The collective “group hug” throughout Ashes, the conversation with Nick, the fact that (finally) I picked up a couple of shirts (one for autographs, one for me), the fact that the expected refund (around $400) came in yesterday (just in time), and, just soooo much more.

I love this band, I love the fact that I can actually DRINK when listening to these guys, that they’re a “drinking band” as it were. I think that threw Nick off last night when I said it, but it is a very good thing.

What can be said that hasn’t already been said, except KEEP ON ROCKIN!! May can’t come soon enough damnit, I want more new shit from RCPM.

If you haven’t seen these guys live, yet, then you’re missing out on a HELL of a live show. Roger and the boys put everything into it, quite literally! Go out, spend the $10 (or $20) and see ‘em!

Next thing looking forward to? Serenity, baby! That movie is gonna kick so much ass. It’s about TIME we got to see it, hopefully it’ll be in town long enough for me to do so!

Lata!

Notice the fact that this is on linuxtoday? Come on , already, quit selling your sorry selves out for the almighty $$$ already. And Microsoft, QUIT spreading these falsities.

Nothing could be farther from the truth, folks. Nothing, at all. Microsoft has a MUCH higher TCO than Linux. It’s sad that they’re STILL trying to get away with this crap, but what can you say, except for "It’s Microsoft". Friggin IDIOTS!

And since when was Microsoft "sponsoring" Linux links here, gang? Talk about completely and totally BIASED! My god!

MORE RCPM!

Gotta love it when bands like this come back to a small assed state that can barely pack bars for their shows. It shows a complete and total dedication to their fans, quite seriously!

The last time RCPM was in Iowa, they were at Keysters, where the drinks were about 2.5x the normal price I’d pay for them, in June.

Of course, we went, and the pictures have been posted.

This time, though, they’re coming to OUR neck of the woods.. Cedar Falls, baby!!!! Tonight!!!!!!!! And, of course, the Iowa fans will be there (plus probably a good representation from Minnesota)

This show is going to kick ass on SOOOO many levels, it’s not funny. Less than 12 hours from now, I’ll be on my way home (well probably not quite on the way home yet) , drunk off my ass, but after a DAMN good show!

If you’re not doing anything tonight, and you happen to BE in the Waterloo, Cedar Falls area, feel free to join in for some GREAT music ($10 cover, REALLY worth it) at THE REVERB. Show starts at 9 pm. Tell your friends, and BE THERE!!!!!

Great music, great drinks, great companionship. What the hell more could you ask for ????

Lata, I’m off for my mid-day nap, before the fun and games begin

Everquest, a 3 year old, New PC and more

Posted by: Tom Whiting | Comments (0) 0 views

Loading ... Loading ...

3 months ago, I said something about building a new "master pc". Well, it’s built, and the name of the beast is "master bater". Yes, folks, that is what my new beast is called. The specs (for those that care):

Processor: Intel p4 3.20 HT processor.
Not quite the top of the line, but it’ll get me by ;)
Memory: 2.0 gig ddr400
Drives:
1×80 gig Seagate
1×100 gig Western Digital
1×200 gig Maxtor
I think I got a bit of storage in there;)
DVD/CD Material
3x DVD+RW drives (would get -RW, but they don’t work worth a shit in my boxes). 2 of which are DL drives, 1 of which is a lightscribe drive (which currently isn’t reading on my board).

Video card:
GeForce FX5500 256 meg DDR AGP card.
I haven’t moved to PCIX yet, but that will be my next move, with my next board I think. Hopefully, NOT for another couple of years!

This thing is a piece of art, literally. My first attempt at this failed, and miserably, because one of the standoffs was off. Usually this wouldn’t matter much, but somehow, it did, this time. The first board fried, completely, and I’m lucky the processor didn’t as well.

All in all, parts (processor, memory, drive, fans, etc) ran well over $450. I’d be more than happy to do it again though, because I have the satisfaction of saying "this is MINE", and knowing that I built it from the ground up.

Aside from that, what else is new?
I’ve recently gotten into Everquest 2. Originally, I purchased the first game 3 years ago (plus packages, etc) for $50. I was so unimpressed that I let the subscription go for the first 30 days and just cancelled. There was no way I was getting into that one again.

When 2 came around, I was little more than curious. I mean, 1 was a huge flop in my mind, but then again, I HATE grouping with people to level shit. Leave me alone to kill my stuff, and I’ll be fine.

I picked up the "trial" download (about 1g) of eq2 and put it on the old beast. Not too shabby, in fact, it was decent enough that I could get my crafting skills up to 7 in no time flat, and my levelling the same. Unfortunately, that’s where the demo ended.

Figuring I’d test it out, I did. I went to BB, picked up the dvd package (for $20) and brought it back home. The next week was spent immersed in EQ2 crap, and I’m just NOW coming out of it. The game is just damn good!

Sure, there’s issues that need to be resolved, but overall, I’d say this is one damn good game. It has to be, in order to get my business, yet again. I’m a pretty tough RPG customer, mind you :)

The 6th marked my 3 year aniversary on webhostingtalk, which, of course means that 3 years ago, my company (www.linux-tech.net) was founded, or at least conceived. While the domain wasn’t purchased until October, I started doing business with individuals a few days after signing up for WHT. 3 damn years, talk about incredible. I’ve been self sufficient for those 3 years, for the most part, as well. My god!

3 years ago, this November 11th, I decided that enough was enough and quit my job with the city of Cedar Falls. I remember the day, because it was my birthday. In fact, it was a birthday present TO myself. No notice, just "I won’t be in tonight", and turn in my keys. Talk about a shock, right?

To celebrate, I’m very seriously considering going to see Zakk Wylde in either St. Louis, or Chicago on my birthday this year. Why? Because I’ve never seen ‘im play, and his music just kicks major ass!

Now, why all the fuss about 3 years? Simple really. A small business has one major hurdle to pull through, which is getting past 3 years. Once you’ve survived those first 3, you’re in good shape, seriously, for the next few. Of course, you have to know how to manage, and plan, and all that, but it’s been done.

Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with some REALLY awesome customers, and they’ve completely stood by me over the past couple of years. Theres nothing I could have done without them.

I was popped with a notice for a "surprise inspection" Wednesday afternoon. So, me, being the slob that I am (yes, folks, I’m a slob), I started in a panic to clean up. Halfway throgh this, I realized that I needed some stuff, like an entertainment center, and bookshelf.

Well, knowing my excellent (yea right!) skills at putting shit together, I called Tony up, and we got shit done. We went up to WM, picked up the bookcase and EC, got back to my place, and Mike was there. So, figuring, what the hell, we called Jonah and told his ass to get over here.

3 hours later, I had more mess in my living room than I did to begin with (cardboard, etc), and one put together EC, and bookshelf. I take NO credit in the assembling of shit, like I said, I SUCK in that department. I couldn’t have done it without the other 3. Thanks guys, you rule!

So, around 6am yesterday, I pinned a note to my door, said don’t disturb until 1pm (they were supposed to start around 10:30 am), and went to bed. The front room had been cleaned, the cats litter had been changed, the place looked (still does) pretty damn good.

I get up around 11′ish, still leaving the note on the door, and just lay down for a bit on the couch. When I went out to check my mail, I found the door was unlocked (Not a surprise), but my chain was still in place. Apparently, they’d chosen to ignore the request and simply go and try to get in themselves . I was up at one though, and no requests for an inspection, so they missed out, not me;) . Like I’m going to let them in my apt. when I’m sleeping? Good GOD, no!

What else is new? Not much of anything. I’m about to lay down and watch a movie, so I’ll let this entry lie here for now. I’ll try not to make it so long before the next one, but no promises, ehh?

New Orleans, Katrina, and the Government

Posted by: Tom Whiting | Comments (0) 0 views
(No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

Now, usually, I stay far away from government issues. I keep my mouth pretty much shut, don’t get in the way, don’t say shit about jack. Why? Because I have no need to. I’m a pretty simple guy, I live a simple life, and need very little (if any) government interaction. In fact, while I could have taken out loans and federal funding to start LTN, I chose not to. Why? Because I was going to make it, or break it on my own, seriously. The past three years (I feel) have shown that I can, indeed, make it decently enough.

But this entry isn’t about me. It’s not about war. It’s not about my business. It’s about the stereotypical political bullshit that is our government. Yes, it’s bullshit.

Wait, HOW is it bullshit? Let me explain, simply.
Over a week after Katrina came through and hit New Orleans, how many people are dead? Nobody knows. How many people are still in their houses, despite forced evacs? Nobody knows. How many people had to survive in the New Orleans arena for a week? Hundreds, probably thousands, or tens of.

Where, on Gods Green Earth was our government during this? Sitting on their perverbial asses in Washington. Did they DO something? Sure, about a week later. Once they got off their asses and got something in a “bill”, they decided to do this.

Is this SERIOUSLY a government that expects us to believe it is okay to leave our people out there on our own streets for a week, with no place to go, looting, and so much more? Come ON already, quit the red tape bullshit, get the fucking help to these people and move on with it.

Mrs. Bush, you criticize people for attacking your husband, when the damage was brought about by a “natural disaster”. Yet, I, and many others propose that, while this “natural disaster” did cause immense damage, the greater damage was caused by the government. Had the government responded in a timely fashion, who knows, things probably would have been a LOT better off. Yet, they had to sit in their cushy chairs, in Washington and stall, like never before. This is typical government political bullshit, and in a case like this, it is damned horrific to see. Come on, allready!

Now, to you idiots causing more problems for the government, already loaded down with issues, in New Orleans. Get the hell OUT of there. What does it take, someone with a gun to force you out? My fucking GOD people. Your city is no more. In fact, it will BE no more for a good 2 years. The longer you keep stalling this shit, the longer it takes to get government support, and to get this city rebuilt.

What part of “the city is toxic” don’t you idiots understand. What , do you WANT to die? Because living there, that’s exactly what IS going to happen. Your drinking water is polluted, your streets are no more, your food is polluted. There IS nothing left for you in New Orleans. Take what government support you can get and get the hell out of dodge, and QUICKLY!

Now, I’d heard that Carnival had offered cruise ships to individuals to stay on for “as long as necessary”. Did anyone take them up on this? Probably, but not as many as could have. Why the hell NOT? I mean, those cruise ships are damned beautiful, people.

In addition, Iowa offered to take a number of affected families. Again, did anyone take this? Not!!! Why the hell not, people? Sure, it aint the prettiest state in the union, and sure, it don’t have a ton of “plusses”, but one major plus is that you can LIVE reasonably well on next to nothing. Now come the hell on!!!!!

As much as I’d love to say that I applaud the government for how things were handled here, I just , flat out can’t. They pissed the whole thing away here, delayed , postponed, and just flat out put no priorities on our own human life. That is pathetic, folks, seriously.
