Crue:: Better Live Than Dead
By 0 viewsSunday night, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get to go, because Mike hadn’t been feeling well the past few days. and Tony had to work Unfortunately those are the breaks, but we managed to pull it off.
4:00 Mike is ready to go, but I’m only somewhat ready. Of course, I know it’s only going to take us 2 hours (not 3) to get there, and the concert doesn’t start till 8, so I’m not too worried there.
Finally, around 430, we take off, heading towards Des Moines, after gas, fillups and all that crap. Gotta get smokes, you know the pre-drive stuff ;).
The weather on the drive up was absolutely horrid. I’ve never seen such storm and crap. Apparently, though, that is part of the area. I’m just thankful that the weather didn’t affect the show one bit.
So, finally, we get there (about an hour early), and Crue starts a half hour late. No real surprise there, I’ve YET to see a concert not start a half hour late. Don’t know why, but it’s just ritual I guess ;).
Opening act? There IS none. This is Motley fucking Crue after all :). They warm up with a video, quite humorous, actually, and the bigtop goes up (did I mention that this was a carnival themed concert?).
I won’t go into specifics as far as the setlist is concerned, because that’d spoil it for you but trust me, it’s well worth it.
The gang plays an hour or so of old shit (shout, redhot, etc), and then we see the video again so they can take a break for the second part of the show.
Finally, second part starts up and of course, the boys come out on their bikes. Not bad, not bad at all, really.
About halfway through the second part, it’s time for Tommy’s Solo, and believe me , THIS is a solo that is unbelievable. Starts out with him on the main drums, which is expected. What it ends up with though is anything but expected. They attatch a wire to ‘im and Tommy goes up to two MORE sets in the air, though these , it looks like are drum machines, not actual drumsets, but still, god DAMN. One is set on each side of the arena. The lights, as always are amazing.
Once Tommy’s solo is done, the guys came back out, and everything returns to normal, more music, more Crue, for a few songs, and they bring the lights back on in the arena.
Usually, the lights in the arena don’t come on again until intermission or show’s end, but in this case it was worth it. Tommy gets the “titty cam” out, and starts patrolling the audience. This, of course, is expected from Crue, because they ARE Motley fucking Crue after all (their words, not mine). At one point, one of the women refuses (yes, I did say refuses) to show ‘em to Tommy, and that got a HUGE boo from the crowd (obviously). Hillariously enough, Tommy ends up DROPPING the damn camera on the ground, causing the titty cam for the night to be gone. Apparently, this isn’t part of the act, or if it is, it wasn’t done when Tony went to see ‘em, so this would count as the curse, or the night’s casualty taking place
The boys come back out, do a few more songs, then leave. Of course, we haven’t seen the encore yet, so we all cheer, trying to get ‘em back out, which, they obligingly return and do two more.
All in all, a VERY well constructed show, the girls made things more interesting (wouldn’t be a crue concert without the strippers/dancers), and it just flat out rocked, literally. Was it worth $120+? Damn skippy. Was it worth the pain of my right foot right now? Damn Skippy! I now own the memories of seeing Crue, and a tour shirt to go with. Sweet assed concert, THANK YOU CRUE!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW: Pictures (what ones turned out anyways) from the phone can be found here.Don’t mind the quality, sorry guys, but the phone isn’t the best “camera” in low light events, and I wasn’t going to risk losing the digital camera (a $2-300 camera) just for this concert ;).
And now, I’m out to rest for a while, damn ankle’s killing me. That’ll teach me to wear work boots to a 3 hour standing concert
